Mounts of the Palm: Venus, Jupiter, Luna and Beyond

If the lines of your palm are the stories, the mounts are the landscape those stories are written upon. These fleshy, raised areas — each named for a classical planet — reveal temperament, innate strengths, and the underlying energies that shape how your life unfolds.

In Indian Samudrika Shastra, the mounts are considered fundamental — some practitioners argue they are more important than the lines, because the mounts reveal raw character while the lines show what you have done with it.

How to Read the Mounts

Look at the raised areas across your palm. The key is their relative development: how raised or flat they are compared to each other.

A well-developed mount amplifies the qualities of that planet. A flat mount suggests those qualities are less prominent. An overdeveloped mount can indicate an excess.

The Seven Classical Mounts

Mount of Venus (Base of the Thumb)

The largest mount on most hands, enclosed by the life line. Governs love, passion, sensuality, warmth, and vitality. A well-developed Venus belongs to someone who loves generously and radiates warmth. Closely associated with the heart line.

Overdeveloped: hedonistic tendencies. Flat: reserved, emotionally contained.

Mount of Jupiter (Beneath the Index Finger)

Governs ambition, leadership, confidence, and spirituality. A strong Jupiter indicates natural authority and a desire to lead. Closely linked to the fate line.

A cross on Jupiter is called the "mystic cross" — associated with spiritual gifts. Chinese palmistry reads strong Jupiter as favorable for politics and public life. For more on crosses, triangles, and other rare palm markings, see our dedicated guide.

Mount of Saturn (Beneath the Middle Finger)

Saturn governs discipline, responsibility, and earned wisdom. Moderately developed: balance and seriousness without heaviness. Overdeveloped: melancholy or excessive seriousness. Flat: someone who carries responsibility lightly.

Mount of Apollo / Sun (Beneath the Ring Finger)

Creativity, artistic ability, charisma, and desire for recognition. Works with the sun line. A strong Apollo mount paired with a strong sun line amplifies creative potential.

Mount of Mercury (Beneath the Little Finger)

Communication, commerce, wit, and adaptability. Appears on skilled communicators, negotiators, and anyone whose talents lie in exchange. Associated with the marriage line, as communication is essential in partnership.

Mount of Luna / Moon (Outer Edge of Palm)

Imagination, intuition, the subconscious, and inner creativity. A strong Luna indicates rich inner life and vivid imagination. When the head line slopes toward Luna, intellectual and imaginative energies combine powerfully.

Mount of Mars (Two Locations)

Inner Mars (between thumb and Jupiter): physical courage, assertiveness. Outer Mars (between Mercury and Luna): endurance, patience, moral courage. Together, they speak to how you handle conflict and adversity.

Reading Your Mounts

Press gently on each mount and compare them to each other. The most developed reveal your dominant energies. Then connect to your lines: strong Venus amplifies the heart line's message about love. Strong Jupiter intensifies the fate line's ambition.
